WHAT A COMEBACK: Aaron Retuzel's Return to Eldora Results in Late-Race Victory
When Aaron Reutzel last left Eldora Speedway on July 18, he was transported to a Dayton hospital and went home with a foot injury that sidelined him from racing for seven weeks.
The Clute, TX native returned to "The Big E" on Friday night - 63 days later - and took his Ridge & Sons Racing No. 87 right to victory lane with a thrilling win over his championship counterpart Rico Abreu on the final restart.
The 25-lap 4-Crown Nationals preliminary began with King Anthony XLII controlling the point as Macri's No. 39M led the first 10 circuits. Abreu ripped the lead away in traffic and appeared to be cruising to his 18th overall win of the year until second-running Macri hit the wall hard and brought out the only stoppage of the race. Macri did climb from his car and walk to the ambulance, but is forgoing Saturday's program as he seeks further evaluation.
On the green-white-checkered restart, Reutzel took advantage of his newfound track position on Abreu's bumper and quickly slid him into turn one. By the time they reached the start-finish line next time for the white flag, Reutzel had secured the lead and then survived one last lap to steal the win.
It was his sixth Kubota High Limit Racing win of the year - seventh of his career - and helped the Ridge & Sons Racing No. 87 team close to 19-points behind the Rico Abreu/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 24 in the Owner Championship battle.
