SUPER SUB: Justin Sanders Takes RSR #87 to First-Career High Limit Win in Placerville Thriller
There have been several drivers over the course of Sprint Car Racing to rightfully earn the moniker of "Super Sub" - a title reserved for those who tentatively step into a seat with lofty expectations and promptly deliver results.
On Saturday night at Placerville Speedway, Justin Sanders joined that club.
Filling in for Aaron Reutzel - who suffered a broken foot at Eldora Speedway last month - the Aromas, California native was entrusted with the Kubota High Limit Racing championship hopes for Ridge & Sons Racing on the west coast, and he's living up to the hype.
Scoring his first-career national series victory, the 32-year-old did it in thrilling fashion as he passed Kaleb Montgomery coming to the white flag and survived a hectic last lap by 0.104-second at the stripe.
While it was Sanders' first national win as the pilot, it was also Aaron Reutzel's first national win in the crew chief role, who is still at the track each night and getting Sanders acclimated with his #87.
Sanders' first, to go along with Reutzel's first four, brings the Ridge & Sons Racing group to five trips to Whiskey Myers Victory Lane in 2025 - and puts them 15-points behind the championship lead with Kubota High Limit Racing.
On the bitter end of defeat at Placerville was Kaleb Montgomery, who led the opening 33 laps before the late-race heartbreak. The Templeton, California 25-year-old was still all smiles post-race, plenty happy with his performance against a national caliber field while still in the early stages of his wing racing career. He certainly won over a heap of race fans entering the Gold Cup Race of Champions next week.
Closing out a podium that was completely controlled by California natives was Visalia, CA transplant, Cory Eliason. It was his fourth-career podium with Kubota High Limit Racing, but the first driving for Washington car owner Shannon Wheatley.
Brad Sweet, from 15th, and Spencer Bayston closed out the top-five at Placerville. Rounding out the top-10 was Tanner Thorson, Shane Golobic, Daison Pursley, Andy Forsberg, and Gauge Garcia.
